A diamond certification is not to be mistaken for an appraisal, as it does not place any monetary value on the gem. It illustrates the diamond's exact measurements and weight, as well as details of its cut and quality, and precisely indicates the individual characteristics of the diamond.

The three most reliable and reputable institutions that certify diamonds are the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the American Gem Society (AGS), and the European Gemological Laboratory (EGL).
